Eco fees
Eco-fees are the financial tool that support the ELT management system in Italy and its related activities of management, collection, treatment, and recovery.
How they work
Upon purchasing new tyres, the buyer pays an eco-fee. Its value depends on tyre weight: bigger and heavier tyres require greater resources for their management. As such, they are charged a higher rate.
This system does not generate profits: the fees are calculated to cover all real operative costs and assure the financial sustainability of the chain.
What eco-fees are for
They support the free tyre collection from tyre dealers, workshops, and service stations all over Italy
They cover transportation costs towards treatment plants
- They assure material recovery and valorisation (rubber, steel, textile fibres)
- They assure the full traceability of every ELT – from their collection to their final recovery
- They optimise the recovery of End-of-Life Tyres, even by the means of activities of research, development and training
Eco-fees are to be indicated on a separate line in sales invoices and receipts with the words: ”eco-fees as per art. 228 of DL. 3rd April 2006, n.152”. This assures transparency to consumers
The value of eco-fees since 2021
Since 1st January 2021, the eco-fees applied by the Ecopneus partners have followed the table here-below. It is divided into 15 categories, defined by MD 182/2019, and grouped into three main areas:
- S (Small) – automobile, motorbike and SUV tyres
- M (Medium) – truck and bus tyres
- L (Large) – industrial, agricultural, and earthmoving vehicles

Transparency in the use of resources
The use of eco-fees is reported to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security every year. It is also published in the Sustainability Report of Ecopneus.
